How can WE improve DHHIG???

DHHIG election is coming soon,  and in order for the organization to run like a well oiled machine, changes are needed! That includes allowing new people with fresh energy and and those who think outside of the box on board.

If you work for the Government  (any type of Government Sector including local, state, federal, private contractor, post office, and etc) you are eligible to be a member of DHHIG organization. According to the by-laws.

“Any person who meets the following qualifications may apply for a membership with voting privileges:

1. Government employees who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, without regard to the degree of hearing loss, the amount of assimilation into Deaf culture, and/or the mode of communication used by the employee;

2. Government employees who are hearing and are associated or work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees, and

3. sign language interpreters, disability program managers, administrative officers and associates of DHHIG. “

Did you know that application for membership to DHHIG  (www.dhhig.org) is free?

At this time, we are mostly interested in gathering comments from members and potential members  on “How can we improve DHHIG”.  Please leave comments or e-mail us at  CFDGE2009@gmail.com .

Reason we ask, is because many members are not proactive in this organization and we are trying to use this blog/vlog  to empower all future and current DHHIG’s members, to encourage more proactive members and alert them of any issues.

ELECTION IS COMING AND IT’S TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY VOTING IN FOR NEW CANDIDATES!!!!

Keep an eye out for our Vlog on our response to the board’s letter and ethics.

The current regime needs to go! That would be a first step.

Many of them are just in for the ride and busy polishing their resume for their own self interest.

  2. cfdge Says:

John- there are some board members that are working hard as they can. Later in this blog, we plan to mention those folks who have dedicated their “lives” to DHHIG.

Thanks for the comments, keep them coming!

  3. Richard Roehm Says:

That’s the problem. “Dedicated their “lives” to DHHIG”. The last thing we need are career board members.

  4. cfdge Says:

    Very true Richard,

what I meant “dedicated their lives” is that there are some members on the board who have tried to made the changes or turn their heads in the right direction but often been bullied or threatened.

  5. Mim Song Says:

DHHIG should do more with Section 508, the law that demands access for all when using govt. technologes. We can have lawsuits and other actions, but one of us alone is not strong enough in resources — we need DHHIG to help do this. Why not know more about this law and use it!

  6. Steve V. Says:

I agree with John- I know several of the members- they are just there to build up thier resume. One person -who works in the same Federal dept as I- is well known as a person who really does nothing for the Deaf. She needs to go from the Board!.

  7. cfdge Says:

MimSong- Yes that is true! Problem is that, if someone (a member) makes a proposal/request for assistance, its uncertain if the board will act. But yes, DHHIG needs to get their act together and start standing up for their own members. There are a lot of other members who are currently being denied VP access, promotion, and even hiring plus more other issues…

Steve V- You’ll be surprised to see who will be running for the upcoming election, barring any attempt by the board to block those candidates. Most of them are new candidates with one goal and that is to strength the DHHIG’s position. We believe candidates announcements will be coming shortly after the election committee releases the new procedures.

If you really want to make a difference, then keep your eyes out for election information and VOTE for the right people when the poll opens.

  8. Steve V. Says:

Thank You for the encouraging words!

For the past couple of years we (the Deaf who work as Feds) have suffered while the current Board did nothing. When I approached this one person-she just nodded- and did nothing. If you are reading this, Ms. P.-you should be ashamed!

  9. Deborah Broadus-Muskauski Says:

What’s really needed is fresh ideas, involved and active members. Do not allow the fact that the current Board is not serving Deaf needs to discourage you.

Together we can make changes. Run for office!! Don’t be afraid to lose, the more people that are willing to make a difference, the better our chances of having an actual BOARD that is interested in serving the MEMBERS.

DHHIG was founded to assist DEAF and HARD of HEARING that worked in goverment to have access to tools needed for their jobs and to EDUCATE the Federal goverment on how best to include this section of the human resources in it’s workforce.

DHHIG is answerable to the members for lack of reports and inability to fulfill it’s obligations to keep us informed! We can change things. It’s not enough to know that the current board is not operating according to accepted procedures agreed to by the general members, we must actively step up and do our parts.

I encourage you all once again, RUN for a postion if you feel that you have the skills needed for the job. Do not feel that you do not have time or qualifications. DHHIG is supposed to be our place to LEARN and gain skills, don’t hold back. Speak to your supervisor, tell him/her that you are considering running for a position. Show him/her OPM’s ruling, and gain their support. You may have more time than you realize! :)

  10. Mike Says:

My concern with the DHHIG election is that it is held and voted at the DHHIG NTC thereby eliminating any voting by DHHIG members who are not members. It would be good if the general election is held outside the NTC and allow everyone to vote.

  11. cfdge Says:

Mike- That is a VALID concern!!!! There are some of us who want to run for the vacant position but its possible that some of us can’t attend NTC.

The concerned letter to DHHIG suggested that they adopt both FLOOR and Online ballot so that everyone can see who is running and also vote for their candidates of their choice.

  12. Deborah Broadus-Muskauski Says:

    This is a valid concern.

I am also concerned about the timing. The members should have and need to have ample time to read and decide whom they want to vote for.

I do not see any of the candidates that have already submitted their packets on the site. Having some packets put up on the website is one way to ensure that members have some time to make decisions before they arrivel Having the floor open is great, but it is going to eat up a lot of time. I am encouraging everyone to send in their packets so that they can be posted on the site ASAP.

The way it seems to be going now..by time the packets are put up we may run into overtime at the voting process or short-change many of the members because they won’t feel as if they had enough preparation time.

    Time is running out!
