DHHIG Board- Please Open the Door!

Hello, my name is Brian Lucas. I have been working for the Federal Government for 6 months.  I want to discuss this issue with you “open the doors to its members”. Recently, DHHIG posted a call of volunteers for election committee; we wish that DHHIG did this before we sent them the concern letter.

The word is that DHHIG has plans to expand its web-site and start using Vlogs.  But where are the members’ involvements in this?  Are you aware that DHHIG is supposed to have 6 standing committees, and they are Development, Finance, Governance, Membership, Bylaws and Public Policy Committees? But none of them are currently active to our knowledge.

The Board needs to start to delegate the projects to the members, and that would increase the members’ experience in leadership, and so on. We are sorely in need for more future leaders. Allowing the members on the chair and committee is a way to reduce that void.

In additional, by allowing the members in the organization, it would encourage more proactive members.

An organization should always be open up to constructive criticisms and feedbacks because they offer a different point of views of issues and “thoughts out of the box”. The more members involved, the more ideas and feedback could be exchanged. DHHIG could learn a lot from its own members.

Now- we are asking DHHIG to allow their own members in!

Thank you.

Commentary- according to the DHHIG By-Laws Section V, Paragraph A

1. The standing committees of the organization shall be the Development, Finance, Governnance, Membership, Bylaws and Public Policy Committees. The Chair shall appoint the chair of each standing committee, other than the Finance Committee.

So where is it??????????????????????

UPDATE @3:32Pm ET- DHHIG just announced openings for development, finance, governance, membership, and communications committee…… A little tooooooooo LATE…….. With only 1 month and half left to election…… They had 2 years to do this…….Its getting OBVIOUS now, that it is time for CHANGES! We still encourage you all to apply for the chair and committee positions. It is possible that the next administration could adopt the current chair and committee members.

Easy on the trash talking. The purpose of this vlog is to spread awareness and hopefully that the members would elect better people on board.

  3. Steve V. Says:

I am not trash talking. I am only stating what alot of Deaf people who work in th Federal Government feel about this board.

    • cfdge Says:

Understood! Thanks for the comments. You could help by letting other deaf government employees know about this site. We would love to get more comments on how members feel about the current board members, how can we, as the members, improve DHHIG and what is expected from the next administration.

Confused Member- I’m surprised your sickkick pager has the capability to view video….

Yes, you are correct Brian is a volunteer coordinator for the NTC, you can find his info on the NTC website. He is also a chairperson for the mentorship program. We did not know till we met him. DHHIG doesn’t publicity give names of people who are involved in the committees except for NTC which is a whole seperate thing. We are thankful for the volunteers on the NTC. Its a huge and difficult project to undertake.

DHHIG’s bylaws requires the organization to have the standing committee (there are six committee which are supposed to be overseeing the board in a way such as the Finance, Governance etc), they DID NOT start actively search for the volunteers till yesterday afternoon which is too late given that the election is a month and half away.

DHHIG can’t just post a volunteer link on the website and stay put, hoping people will click. They have to be actively recruiting volunteers, letting people know what positions are open and keep them involved. DHHIG needs to make their own members feel welcomed to volunteer.

Right now, there are too many board members acting as a chair for the projects, causing them say that they are “busy”. They could have decrease that workload by DELEGATING the projects which most board members don’t want to because they can’t let go of their “pet project”.

You will get the opportunity to meet Brian Lucas at the NTC.

“DHHIG looks good”- that is because nobody is saying anything. They’re running it like a secret society.

Where my msg yesterday q it is there whn I post it.. Why u delete it are u afraid to face the truth q don’t worry I go to ntc tell people abt this site and u people

    • cfdge Says:

What message? your message was posted yestersday and we post a reply. Haven’t heard back from you till now. Maybe its your sidekick that is giving you problems.

What truth are you talking about? We have no secrets but to let members be aware of what is going on. If you were really smart (we already know who you are ) you would not be fishing and posting anonymous comments on this site and further expose the board more becuase there are ALOT of secrets that needs to be revealed and they will be.

Feel free to let other people to know. They deserve to know the truth. You accused Brian Lucas of lying… May I remind you- who is in CHARGE and who has the access to the DHHIG e-mail system. Mr.Lucas is just a volunteer…

  12. Deborah Broadus-Muskauski Says:

Sigh..I am still waiting for the link to show positions open in
    Treasurer
    Chair
    Vice-Chair
    Secretary
    etc.

Is it time for the voting to begin? Should our members that may want to run for office have time to consider it? If it’s posted at the last minute perhaps less people will run because they haven’t had time to discuss the issues with their boss/ supervisors?

Isn’t it time for the present board to run again or step down? Where are we in the time line of their terms of service? If everyone is actually ready to open the door, they can be voted out at NTC. They can be removed.

All one has to do is make a motion, and have it seconded and HAVE PEOPLE READY TO STEP IN PLACE. We have a few people that want to run..why aren’t they posted??

Is there a date established to have the posting of the nominated candidates on the DHHIG site? Does anyone know???

  13. JohnO Says:

    Deborah,

If you are not satisfied with the work volunteers are doing, spell out what you find wrong with their work to prop up DHHIG for 10 years running without a single dollar paid to any of them in form of Administrative expenses.

Also, it would be nice to see where the bylaws prescribes the removal remedy you are stating.

A little bit of history here. I know you were not around then, but in May 2002 “1st bi-annual DHHIG One-Day Seminar”, I actually was the one who proposed that DHHIG bylaws be modified to prescrbe a term limit for DHHIG board positions.

Over 100 members were in attendance voted and it was the MEMBERS who roundly voted the proposal down.

The argument by opponents made sense to the members who voted. Among the arguments I can remember were:

    – our senators do not have term limits. Senators are elected and re-elected as long as they continue to do a service to their constituents.

    – DHHIG cannot afford to reject hard working volunteers because there were so few coming out and even fewer were STAYING to work.

Again, those were arguments made to reject MY motion.
(It is ironic that I am one of the only two board members still around since then due to this lack of term limit….)

In short, what you are proposing is not in the current DHHIG bylaw. It needs to be in there first before a parliamentarian can act on it.

I do not profess to be a parliamentarian so I am not sure if such a proposal would be in order.

Board members can be re-elected as long as they are nominated ant they continue to show interest like any other volunteer. Their past record should speak for itself. Members should be allowed to speak with their votes.
